Drunkard: A person who drinks large amounts of alcohol very often and is unable to give up the habit.
" The husband was a drunkard, the innkeeper's wife had said, an arrogant, overbearing, bullying little drunkard, but the young woman was gentle and religious".

Creep: To move slowly, quietly and carefully, usually in order to avoid being noticed.
"Sometimes I used to get up in the night and creep over to the cradle and put my ear close to her mouth just to make sure that she was breathing"


Cradle: A small bed for a baby, especially one that swings from side to side.

Tinge: A very slight amount of a colour or of a feeling."The woman's face was white and bloodless, and there was a slight bluish-grey tinge around the nostrils and the mouth"

Nostrils: Either of the two openings in the nose through which air moves when you breathe.

Strand: A thin thread of something, often one of a few twisted around each other to make a string or rope.
" A few strands of damp hair hung down over her forehead, sticking to the skin."

Damp: Slightly wet, especially in a way that is not pleasant or comfortable.
" A few strands of damp hair hung down over her forehead, sticking to the skin."

Merciful: describes someone who shows kindness and forgiveness to people who are in their power
"...Oh god, be merciful unto him now..."

Patting: to lightly touch someone or something several times with your hand flat, especially to give comfort
"Dear lady´, the doctor said, patting her hand."

Strolling: to walk somewhere in a slow relaxed way.
"And my husband... he was strolling among the guests with a big glass of beer in his hand."

Inquisitive: asking too many questions and trying to find out too many details about something or someone.
"I was simply being an inquisitive old man, that is all."

Gazing: to look at someone or something for a long time, giving it all your attention, often without realizing you are doing so.
"The mother lay on the bed gazing at the childand smiling and touching him and making little noisesof pleasure."

Prancing Stride: to walk or dance with high steps or large movements, especially in a confident way.
"The father turned and walked with a little curious prancing stride over to the bed where his wife was lying."

Trunk: A large box with a hinged lid for storing or transporting clothes and other articles.
"Them had arrived quite suddenly at the inn with one trunk and one suitcase..."


Overbearing: Overcome by emotional pressure or physical force.
"The husband was a drunkard, the innkeper´s wife had said, an arrogant, overbearing ..."


Raindrops: A single drop of rain.
"The houses and the huge raindrops splashing on the tiles."


Nostrils: Either of two external openings of the nasal cavity in vertebrates that admit air to the lungs and smells to the olfactory nerves.
"There was a slight bluish-grey tinge around the nostrils and the mouth"


Forehead: The part of the face above the eyebrows.
"A few strands of damp hair hung down over her forehead..."


Baptised: Admit (someone) into a specified church by baptism.
"We baptised him quickly on the third day and he died the same evening."


Settled: Resolve or reach an agreement about (an argument or problem).
"Have you settled on a name for him yet?."


Bosom: A woman´s chest.
"The innkeeper´s wife, carrying the baby high up on her enormous bosom..."


Wrapped: Cover or enclose (someone or something) in paper or soft material.
"Is he well wrapped ?" the doctor asked. "It´s extremely cold in here."


Shawl: A piece of fabric worn by women over the shoulders or head or wrapped around a baby.
"The baby was tightly swaddled in a white woollen shawl..."



Inches: A unit of linear measure equal to one twelfth of a foot.
"He bent lower and lower until his face was only about twelve inches from the baby´s head."



Bewildered: To become perplexed and confused.

"He seemed bewildered and stricken."

Merciful: To wait to a miracle happens

"Oh God, be merciful unto him now"
